Minus, an entirely new platform for file-sharing, has been created by a Babson College senior, whose career started when he was 9. John Xie created his first website as a child, and a web hosting company as a teenager.
 

Minus is a new tool for sharing pictures, documents, audio and video files, and actually all types of files by simply dragging them from the desktop or a folder into their browsers. The sharing can also be committed though Minus desktop or mobile applications. The client was developed by John Xie in cooperation with Carl Hu, a principal engineer at Amazon.com. Both of the application founders admitted that their goal was to simplify file-sharing and develop the simplest and easiest experience for Internet users. John Xie also revealed that Minus has collected a database of over 1/3 million users, 1 million uploads and 1 billion hits since the application was launch back in October 2010. Minus even managed to win the Babson’s Student Business of the Year Award in April 2011, which brought him $5.000 cash prize. SSH TUNNEL LINUX

SSH TUNNEL UNDER LINUX, Revisited

SSH stands for secure shell and is an encrypted data transfer protocol which is commonly used for Linux server. Tunnelling, in the context of computer networking, is the act of creating a link between two systems with one protocol that encapsulates additional protocols within itself.

One of the most simple ways to set up an SSH Tunnel is to make use of the ssh command’s -D argument. This argument allows you to specific a port upon which to listen locally. This causes ssh to act as a local SOCKS proxy server, routing any traffic pointed at this local proxy through the SSH tunnel. More details about the -D argument of ssh is shown below in the form of an extract from ssh’s man page.

-D port

Specifies a local “dynamic” application-level port forwarding. This works by allocating a socket to listen to port on the local side, and whenever a connection is made to this port, the connection is forwarded over the secure channel, and the application protocol is then used to determine where to connect to from the remote machine. Currently the SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 protocols are supported, and ssh will act as a SOCKS server. Only root can forward privileged ports. Dynamic port forwardings can also be specified in the configuration file.

One of the simplest methods to set-up an SSH tunnel, is the following command in a Linux terminal.

ssh -D 8080 username@example.com

This connects to the computer at ‘example.com’ and attempts to authenticate as ‘username’, asking for a password if necessary. When authentication is successful, ssh will act as a SOCKS proxy server on port 8080 as defined in the command. All you then need to do is configure your software (for example, your web browser) to run through a SOCKS proxy at ‘localhost’ or ’127.0.0.1′ on port 8080.

To set up an SSH tunnel, one configures an SSH client to forward a specified local port to a port on the remote machine. Once the SSH tunnel has been established, the user can connect to the specified local port to access the network service. The local port need not have the same port number as the remote port.

SSH tunnels provide a means to bypass firewalls that prohibit certain Internet services — so long as a site allows outgoing connections. For example, an organization may prohibit a user from accessing Internet web pages (port 80) directly without passing through the organization’s proxy filter (which provides the organization with a means of monitoring and controlling what the user sees through the web). But users may not wish to have their web traffic monitored or blocked by the organization’s proxy filter. If users can connect to an external SSH server, they can create an SSH tunnel to forward a given port on their local machine to port 80 on a remote web server. To access the remote web server users would point their browser to http://localhost/.

Some SSH clients support dynamic port forwarding that allows the user to create a SOCKS 4/5 proxy. In this case users can configure their applications to use their local SOCKS proxy server. This gives more flexibility than creating an SSH tunnel to a single port as previously described. SOCKS can free the user from the limitations of connecting only to a predefined remote port and server.

If all of the physical memory space used by programs, the Kernel begin to use Swap to allocate more memory.
If all of the swap already in use, the server (or computer) will hang and needs to reboot (Dangerous for productions Servers)
I share the most important part of my Simple script to prevent high swap memory usage.

This Supercomputer uses RedHat Enterprise Linux as the operating system.

Roadrunner differs from many contemporary supercomputers in that it is a hybrid system, using two different processor architectures. Usually supercomputers only use one, since such a design is easier to design and program for. To realise the full potential of Roadrunner, all software will have to be written specially for this hybrid architecture. The hybrid design consists of dual-core Opteron server processors manufactured by AMD using the standard AMD64 architecture. Attached to each Opteron core is a PowerXCell 8i processor manufactured by IBM using Power Architecture and Cell technology. As a supercomputer, the Roadrunner is considered an Opteron cluster with Cell accelerators, as each node consists of a Cell attached to an Opteron core and the Opterons to each other.

Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you’re constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up.  How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible?

1. Defrag regularly -  The faster your hard drive does its work – less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery.  Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly. (but not while it’s on battery of course!) Mac OSX is better built to handle fragmentation so it may not be very applicable for Apple systems.
2. Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen.  Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance.  Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.
3. Cut down on programs running in the background.  Itunes, Desktop Search, etc.  All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life.  Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.
